About Williams Kenpo Karate

MEET THE MASTERS

Master Edmund K. Parker
The style we teach has evolved from ancient and traditional Japanese and Chinese styles that grew to be called American Kenpo Karate. William K.S. Chow, who taught the original Kenpo system in Honolulu, Hawaii, was the original teacher of Mr. Edmund K. Parker, who became the first  instructor to teach American Kenpo Karate, commercially and professionally in the United States in the 1940’s. When Mr. Parker first arrived in the United states, he referred to his style as Kenpo Karate, (which means Law of the Fist and Empty Hand). In the United States, Mr. Ed Parker first started teaching in Utah in 1948.  Some of his well known students were the late Elvis Presley, Jeff Speakman, and others.  Mr. Parker opened his first commercial school in California in 1956. In 1964 he established the longest and  largest international tournament, known as the International Karate Championships. This event served as a launching pad for many, now famous martial artists, such as:  Chuck Norris, Frank Trejo, Tom Kelly, Bob White, Benny Urqidez, and many others.  He also was a personal friend to the late Bruce Lee, and even showcased his skills at his tournament.  Senior Grand Master Edmund K. Parker has been dubbed the “Father of American Karate”. He has authored many books, with a multitude of Kenpo knowledge, now considered the standard of American Kenpo.
